Mount Angel Library, Alvar Aalto
Inspiration is key to design and whilst researching libraries and the use of natural light in architecture, unsurprisingly The Mount Angel Library was one of the first buildings I studied. Here Aalto makes full use of North light that penetrates the building through a crescent shaped skylight (not direct sunlight, thus minimizing glare) to illuminate a large multi-floor interior space. I spent a lot of time studying this building and how and why it worked. I built a scaled sectional model of the library and spent time sketching and photographing it. This enabled me to imagine the space and thus greatly influenced my Poetry Library design.
