Bregenz Museum, Peter Zumthor
I studied this art museum as a precedent whilst designing my Bristol Dance + Language School. What began with a sketch prompted me to build a model in an attempt to fully understand the architecture. I was interested in the way Zumthor lit each floor only from above. His simple yet effective structural system allows light to penetrate the translucent facade and through ceiling panels, filling each space with diffuse light. At night when there is little or no natural light, artificial lighting in the service void above the ceiling plays a similar role. The interior photographs of this model shows the powerful effect of light only entering a space from above. The model was hugely effective in understanding the buildings structural principles which allowed Zumthor to create such atmospheric spaces within.
