Otaniemi Chapel, Heikki + Kaija Siren
The chapel sits quietly amongst the pine and birch trees in the Aalto University Campus, Finland. The truss system used within the chapel is truly beautiful. The structure is elegant and slender yet has a strong visible presence. The materials used allude to the trunks of the Finnish forest beyond. This design has encouraged me to see structure as something that can be celebrated and exposed rather than simply functional and hidden. Building a scaled model helped me imagine what it is like to stand under the roof trusses. The model was built using wood and I took time ensuring that I respected the craftsmanship of the original and tried to apply this in my work.
