I have summed my design process into four key diagrams. I wished the main library space to be set back from the street to gain a degree of privacy and quiet. Threshold became important, I needed to create an in-between space. This took the form of a courtyard or 'external room'. This space was cased by monolithic concrete slabs with slender gaps between them, enough to allow brief views in for passers-by. A journey is being created through what is shown and what is hidden. Another key driver was utilising north light for ideal lighting conditions for reading and writing. The timber facade helps to create focused and inspiring views toward the sky and to nature in the form of a large tree within the courtyard.
